Topic 1: What is a complex emergency?

The United Nations office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (known more commonly as OCHA) administers ReliefWeb, an online gateway to information, documents and maps, on humanitarian emergencies and disasters. According to OCHA, in 2008 some of the world’s complex emergencies were: Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, East Africa Drought, Eritrea-Ethiopia, Great Lakes, Kenya, Sahel Humanitarian Crisis, Somalia, Southern Africa Humanitarian Crisis, Sudan, Uganda, West Africa, Zimbabwe; Afghanistan, Caucasus (Armenia; Azerbaijan; Georgia), DPR Korea, East Timor, Indonesia, Iraq, Lebanon, Nepal, Occupied Palestinian Territory, Russian Fed., Chechnya, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Balkans, Colombia, and Haiti.

ReliefWeb is the most comprehensive global data base on humanitarian situations, whether these be caused by natural disasters, or a combination of natural disaster exacerbated by conflict.

  • Open up ReliefWeb at: http://www.reliefweb.int
  • Choose an event from either the ‘Countries & Emergencies’ or ‘Latest Natural Disasters’ and scan through the latest 6 to 10 situation reports relating to the event you have selected.

Activity 1.2

Select three countries/events from ReliefWeb and prepare a short one paragraph description as to why these are considered complex emergencies, and then in your next paragraph provide the list of international aid organisations involved in these emergencies. Use the chart located by clicking on ‘Print this Activity’.
