About the Master of Emergency Management course

In 1999 we commenced offering the two year part-time post-graduate Master of Emergency Management course to compliment and provide a continuing study option for under-graduates. Candidates for this course are generally required to have an under-graduate degree in Emergency Management or a related or allied discipline area. However, in some exceptional circumstances, applicants without a full undergraduate degree may be permitted to enrol in the course. In such cases we will examine the individual applications and make a decision based upon the applicant’s demonstration of their ability to study successfully at a post-graduate level.

The Master of Emergency Management course comprises four double subjects studied over a two year period. The first two subjects are emergency management focused and are studied concurrently over the first two sessions of study. The final two subjects are risk management focused and also studied concurrently in the final 12 months of the course.

The subjects within the course are:

EMG505 - Readings in Emergency Management

(Double subject focussing on the analysis of emergency management practice and the development of strategies to enhance emergency management practice through the conduct of an industry based project.)

EMG506 - Independent Study in Emergency Management

(Double subject focusing on the development of a research question and learning to critically review literature relevant to your project being developed in EMG505.)

EMG507 - Readings in Risk Management

(Double subject focussing on the analysis of risk management practice and the development of strategies to enhance risk management practice through the conduct of an industry based project.)

EMG508 - Independent Study in Risk Management

(Double subject focusing on the development of strategies to improve risk management practice through the implementation of teaching and learning, education, policy or innovation initiatives.)

Credit and RPL in the Master of Emergency Management

We offer various credits to students who may have completed relevant post-graduate studies in allied fields. Generally the completion of a relevant graduate certificate could enable students to apply for one subject credit, whilst the successful completion of a Graduate Diploma or other relevant Masters degree could enable students to apply for two subjects credit within the program. The maximum credit we can provide at post-graduate level is 50% of the program, therefore two subjects is the maximum credit available.

If you believe you may qualify for credit or are completing other studies concurrently with your Master’s degree studies and believe that those studies may qualify for credit, you should contact the Course Coordinator to discuss your situation and the options available to you.
