Topic 9: Risk treatment, conclusions and planning objectives
Overview
The final step of the emergency risk management process is the treatment of risks. The purpose of treating risks is to reduce the likelihood and consequences of risks impacting upon a community or the environment. Risk treatment is about identifying the options for treating the risks that have been analysed during the risk assessment. There are three activities that need to be undertaken to effectively treat risks:
- treatment options are evaluated;
- preferred treatment options are selected; and
- plans are drawn up to treat the risks and then implemented.
As a part of these three stages in the risk treatment process, conclusions are drawn from the risk assessment. These conclusions are then used to identify, evaluate and select the most appropriate treatment options. The conclusions must be based on the information contained in the other steps of the risk assessment process. The treatment options contained within your risk treatment plan are your recommendations arising from the risk assessment, and form the link between risk assessment and emergency management planning.
In this topic we provide advice on how to draw up your list of conclusions, treatment options and associated risk treatment plan from your risk assessment findings.
Learning outcomes
After completing the work for this topic, you should be able to:
- explain the process of identifying treatment options;
- draw conclusions from your risk assessment;
- identify treatment options relevant to the risks analysed in your risk assessment project and draw up a risk treatment plan.
