In this, the final chapter of Disciplines, disasters and emergency management, McEntire and Smith summarise the contributions of discipline experts who have written on their field and its relationship to Emergency Management. The previous chapters covered a wide variety of disciplines, including Engineering, Social Work, Psychology, Communications and the Media, Law, Public Health and Geography. In Topic 7 you read the chapter on Environmental Management.
This Reading is the final chapter of the book and it neatly encapsulates the main points from each chapter. Rather than have you buy the book and read it from cover to cover, I am setting this chapter as a Reading which will summarise the contents for you. If you have access to this book, feel free to select a chapter pertaining to a discipline that may more directly relate to your work and study.
If you are considering researching your discipline in relation to Emergency Management at a later stage in your studies, I recommend reading this book.
In this extract from Chapter 3 in Mapping vulnerability: Disasters, development and people, Omar Cardona also makes connections between the natural sciences, the applied sciences and the social sciences in relation to risk management and disasters.

Are there differences between McEntire and Smith, and Cardona, or are they essentially saying the same thing? |

Now that you have completed the Readings for this topic, place a forum posting explaining the connections you have made between Emergency Management and various related disciplines. If you are taking this subject as an elective, you could share the connections you have made with your primary discipline, and vice versa for Emergency Managers. |

Final message
You have now reached the end of your studies in EMG308 Disaster Recovery, Resilience and Sustainability. At the very least you should now be n a good position to describe and explain the interrelatedness between the social aspects of a community (e.g. ethnicity, gender, age), the sustainable management of the environment, and the ability of a community to recover from disaster (vulnerability and resilience).
I hope that you have enjoyed this subject, and I value your feedback for future deliveries. Please take the time to drop me an email or complete the online student evaluation.
I wish you every success and enjoyment with the remainder of your studies,
Val Ingham.
