Topic 1: Emergency Management Review
Overview
Topic 1 introduces the basic Emergency Management concepts that you will require in order to negotiate the context of this subject. For those of you who have already studied EMG100 Introduction to Emergency Management, treat this topic as a refresher and if after reading through the Learning Outcomes below you feel confident that this material is very familiar to you, please move on to Topic 2. For students from other disciplines who are taking EMG308 as an elective, welcome to Emergency Management!
Topic 1 will give you a feel for Emergency Management vocabulary and concepts and will provide an essential background context for the rest of your study in this subject.
Learning outcomes
After completing the work for this Topic you will be refreshed and reminded of:
- the definitions of terms used in Emergency Management
- classifying disasters
- a framework for Emergency Management
- the relationship between Recovery Management and Risk Management
- the risk assessment process

Use the subject's online forum to briefly introduce yourself. This only needs to be something short. For example, where you are from, what you do, your link with Emergency Management and one thing that you hope to learn from your involvement in this subject.
