Responding to a disaster has important psychosocial dimensions. Emergency managers need to be sensitive to relevant cultural differences, particularly concerning attitudes toward suffering and death. In the following activities you are asked to reflect on your point of view concerning a number of important issues.

On page 25 Eyre (Reading 9.1) suggests that stress reactions are a normal response to disaster involvement. She also suggests that most people do not require 'long-term treatment' as they recover 'naturally'. This is a complex issue currently being debated amongst disaster researchers i.e. the concept of resilience and the coping mechanisms of humans. What is your opinion regarding stress reactions, 'treatment' and human coping mechanisms? Consider using practical examples to illustrate your point.
