Terminology

Throughout this Study Guide, and also in the assignment guidelines (Subject Outline), I refer to a number of terms. For ease of understanding and in order to reduce any confusion, I have provided my definition of what these terms refer to below:

Event:

This is the emergency/disaster event that you have selected or chosen to analyse within this subject and within the following EMG208 subject.

Project:

This is the overall activity that you will conduct in this subject related to the analysis and evaluation of your selected emergency/disaster event. It is expected that your project will then continue from this subject’s analysis of the pre-impact and impact phases of your selected event to the following subject’s (EMG208) analysis of the post-impact phase and hypothetical re-occurrence of your selected event. The project relates to the completion of the Study Guide topics, the collection of data and information about your selected event, the analysis and evaluation of that data within the emergency management parameters that we provide and finally the writing and submission of your final report on the analysis and evaluation of the management of your selected event.

Report:

The report is the final major report for this subject that details the analysis and evaluation of the management of certain emergency management activities within the pre-impact and impact phases of your selected event. The report is Assignment 2 within this subject.

Learning portfolio:

A learning portfolio is a collection that you can construct as you proceed through each topic within this subject. In each topic there are activities that you may like to save to your computer and complete, or you might like to print out and complete. As you progress through the topics you will see a 'save or print activity' link at the bottom of the activities that are suitable for including in your learning portfolio.

The idea here is to collect the various activities and assignment development work in a central location so that you can easily access, revisit and review the information that you have completed, accumulated and collected during the subject. This information will be required by you in the formulation and completion of your various assignment activities.

It is up to you how you store or keep this information, however some examples that you might care to use are:
