Topic 4: Time and geographical implications
Overview
In this Topic you will be required to look at the time and then the geographic implications of the event you have chosen.
The time implications cover the relationship between the time of your selected event and how this affected the level of preparedness and the responses to the event. The timing includes the date (week-end/public holiday/week-day), time (day/night), and season (if applicable), in which the event occurred and the issues that this may have raised during the pre-impact phase of your selected event in relation to the level of preparedness for, and response to the event.
The geographical implications of your event focuses on whether:
- the actual geographical location was a contributing factor to the event,
- the warning and alerting systems were influenced by the geographical location,
- the geographical location/scene of the event might present any problems regarding the management of the event,
- the resources were readily available before the event and, if not, whether processes were in place to access them, and
- the level of preparedness of the emergency services and the effected community was adequate given the geographic location of the event and the time that it occurred.
Learning outcomes
After completing the work for this Topic, you should be able to:
- describe any implications due to the time your event occurred;
- determine any implications associated with the geographical locations of your selected event that may have had an influence on the pre-impact emergency management arrangements.
Self directed activity
As mentioned to you in previous Topics of this subject you are required to research the pre-impact phase of an emergency event within the parameters established in Topic 1.
Throughout this Topic you will be provided with some guidelines for research into the time and geographical implications as they relate to your selected event.
It is recommended that you read the entire Topic before commencing to address the assignment requirements.
