Topic 10: Media management
Overview
In our previous topics in this Impact Phase analysis section, we have dealt with organisational roles and responsibilities, command and control and Emergency Operations Centres.
In this topic you will examine the role of the media in disaster/emergency management within your own community. You will then be able to use this information to identify how the media influenced the management of the disaster/emergency event you have chosen to research and how the agencies and organisations managed their interaction with the media during the impact phase of your selected event.
All through the topic you will be given guidelines on your major report (Assignment 2) work related to this topic. Activities in the topic are designed to provide a base of information against which your assignment work can be constructed.
Learning outcomes
After completing the work for this topic you should be able to:
- identify the media agencies within your own local community;
- identify any media management/liaison policies or procedures adopted by response agencies within your community or lack thereof; and
- identify and report on how the media influenced the management of your selected disaster/emergency event and how the response organisations handled and managed the media during the event.
- discuss the effectiveness of media management within the impact phase of your selected emergency/disaster event.
