Command

As reviewed in the previous section, COMMAND is the function of ordering and is based on a hierarchical system within a single organisation operating in a vertical manner.

Some examples of this structure can be seen in operation in uniformed, disciplined services such as Police and Defence Forces.

It is fairly easy to come up with a list of organisations which have a command structure. Your list may include such organisations as police/law enforcement agencies, military forces, customs agencies, paramilitary agencies, government departments, to name a few.

It would be fairly safe for us to say that in most instances, organisations responding to a disaster/emergency event would be operating under a command structure.

Some organisations may not refer to their structure as a command - they may use words such as management, direction, supervision or regulation but the overriding attribute is that it is a vertical structure within their respective organisation and has the function of ordering.

Activity 8.3

learning portfolio activity Consider the occurrence of a major urban fire in your community impacting a number of premises. Which organisations are going to be involved in the response to this event?

Complete the table of information provided in the link below for this activity. List the organisations that would be required to respond, briefly what their main role is, whether or not the organisation operates under a clear command structure, briefly describe what that structure is and who the organisation's commander would be at the scene of the incident. Once you have completed your work, save your table into your Learning Portfolio.
