Topic 3: Training
Overview
By now you should have completed your mid-term assignment and produced a draft set of standard operating procedures. You may remember that during Topic 2 we discussed the possible need to conduct training for some or all of those who have a role to play, or actions to carry out, within the SOP.
What we need to determine is who needs training, in what tasks and to which performance level. We then need to design, develop and conduct training and validate its effectiveness and efficiency.
This Topic will provide you with the knowledge and skills to obtain answers to the first three questions and the ability to design and develop a training program and understand the delivery of training and conduct validation of the training. We will do this by applying certain processes to a consideration of the standard operating procedures that you developed in your mid term assignment and some examples of SOP provided in Topic 2.
In this topic we will:
- consider the need for training,
- In the second section we will study the training cycle as a whole and examine the principles of training needs analysis,
- examine the processes involved in a training needs analysis and develop a method for applying them to our SOP,
- examine the way in which we can develop training by writing training objectives and preparing tests to ascertain whether we have achieved our training aims,
- look at the processes involved in writing a training program, including the planning of training strategies, the conduct of training and tests and the development of a training block syllabus, and,
- examine the issue of measuring the effectiveness and efficiency of our training by designing and delivering a validation program.
